Penny Lane is an Australian photographer who has recently moved to the fascinating & inspirational HQ that is London…
Whilst studying a degree in Fashion & Textile Design, and doing elective studies in photography, she decided that taking photos of her fellow students collections was much more fun and important then working on her own collections…
So after completing that degree with a double major in Photography, she cut her teeth in freelance photography shooting new and upcoming designer labels in Perth, and co-founding a couple of multi-disciplinary design & arts studios that set about a new direction and strength in the small but prolific arts, design & fashion industry in western australia…
Also a passionate fan of all things music , she was lucky to work with & shoot for some of Australia’s brightest musicians that seem to prolifically hail from this ends-of-the-earth city, a highlight was shooting Empire of the Sun while shooting their music-video on a remote beach and in a cave , for their music video “standing on the shore” … in a commission for Q Magazine (UK)…
Like most photographers from perth they seem to migrate east, and then Penny moved to Melbourne and continued to work freelance across the country , in Sydney , Perth melbourne & Brisbane.. shooting for prominent australian + international fashion labels, editorials for magazines, commercial campaigns , a real variety of different briefs, and of course band & artist portraits…
With a stroke of luck she took out the award for the coveted QANTAS Spirit of Youth Award (SOYA), an national competition celebrating young people doing their thing in the Design & Arts industry in australia , and she won the category for Photography in 2010, which as a life changing opportunity and such an honour… she was lucky to have a mentor of legendary Rock photographer Tony Mott to give her advice and pearls of wisdom, and spent 2011 working and traveling to different parts of the world, including a basing herself for a couple of months London…
Inspired by spending time in the buzzing metropolis, she decided to practice walking very fast and keeping to the right on escalators, spent Xmas back home in Australia soaking up the sun and shooting outside in scorching conditions…, and then moved to London in the spring… ready to work and travel like crazy, and to sink her teeth into, and take a bit bite out of , the cutting edge industry in London… and like the Very Hungry Caterpillar , she is still hungry…!
